ART HACK DAY

The Exhibit

On September 21, artists, technologists, activists, and students joined forces at Harvard's Northwest Science Building to build art interventions that fought for suffrage, condemned bribery, and celebrated the political power of expression. Visitors were invited to engage and interact with the projects online throughout the hack, and join the teams Sunday night for a closing exhibition. In the face of corporations being treated as people, campaign contributions determining elections, and lobbyists defining our national priorities, we hacked campaign finance and built interventions through new creative collaborations.

BACKGROUND

The Lab believes artists’ can ignite and create space for inclusive conversations. But young artists rarely collaborate with individuals and communities right outside their academic institutions. Working with Harvard University’s Cultural Agents Initiative, The Lab demonstrated a new inclusive and innovative model for universities working within larger communities to address global concerns. We also hoped by inviting students and artists we would bring diversity of experience into a notoriously white male conversation (campaign finance) and community (hackers). We asked participants to create participatory art interventions would engage a broader community with the issues surrounding campaign finance reform.
